Antique Rug Most Asked Question

Although there are deep and rich intricacies on the culture, variation, methodology and history of Persian rugs and other antique rugs for an experienced antique rug dealer or gallery owner to answer, sometimes it seems like the simplest things that people want to know about.
I feel like one of the main questions I am asked is "Is it okay to use an old rug on an already-carpeted floor?"
And the answer is yes! Almost half of our rugs are chose simply to decorate or add color or 'mood' to a room that already has floor protection.
Of course, the type of carpet you have affects this answer- I'm not going to lie, a shag carpet maybe wouldn't be best suited for an area rug on top of it. A shorter piled broadloom is ideal- too long and you have to use a rug pad.
Smaller rugs especially can be used to great effect over wall to wall carpeting. Place one at the end of your bed, in the entryway, under your coffee table, and more. A gorgeous Persian carpet in front of the fireplace especially can be an nice, homey touch to your living room.
If you don't LIKE the look of rug over carpet, that's another thing. If you still want to use the decorative qualities of these works of art, you can always hang them on walls or draped over a side-table in a dining room for effect.
In fact, in the history of Persian rugs, they were not always meant to be used on the floor- the greater artworks especially were meant to be hanged.
