Antique Rugs from Around the World

Persian rugs are not the only type of high-quality, beautiful antique rugs out there! For example, Chinese rugs have gorgeous, delicate silk weaves and can be so highly intricate that they'll make you dizzy. Finely-woven old Tabriz rugs, the kind that tend to have a white or pale tan background, have gorgeous and bold patterns.
Iranian Bidgjar rugs are generally created by Kurds, and they're so rich and densly woven that they're almost impossible to fold, but are as sturdy as anything. They have the cute nickname of 'iron rugs', but they are literally almost impossible to lift!
Some tribes in various Mesopotamic-nations still create absolutely beautiful tribal rugs, although it's always a matter of taste.
Japanese rugs are less well-known and rarer, and generally hard to get your hands on, because they tend to use tatami mats more often. But when you find them, the silk is like water and the patterns can be epic tales of samurai and servants, emperors and rice-paddy girls.
The rugs of Ulaanbaatar in Mongolia are so hearty and warm that they could almost be used instead of a space heater, and there are even some rare weavers in north eastern Russia that have a reputation for grand artistry.
So keep in mind that the term 'Oriental Rug' is a blanket term, and there are many options to explore!
