Tips for Redecorating the Living Room

11-03-2010 / By: Margaret

Redecorating a living room can be a challenging time in a family's life. It can also be a lot of fun. Choosing styles, colors and accessories are great ways to discover who likes what and why. And while different chair and sofa styles may beckon to different family members, one accessory seems to help hold it all together: an antique Persian rug.

Before you run out to the nearest antique rug dealer, some of the basics of decorating and redecorating need to be completed. Pick the paint colors for the walls, trim and ceiling. Take the possibility of resale into consideration and avoid bright purple or lime green walls and furniture. Staying with neutral colors throughout allows the family the opportunity to accessorize with bright colors and patterns.

Decorators and remodelers are more than happy to work with family members, but certain procedures are recommended for completing the redecorating in a timely and professional manner. One of those first steps is to paint the ceilings, walls and trim. It may be that previously applied wallpaper needs to come down. And paint primer may be necessary, so don't expect this work to be completed in a day or even week. You probably don't have Ty Pennington's crew working for you.

If there is work to be done on floors ... wood or carpet ... that should be done next. Are you replacing the carpet or sanding the floors and putting a new finish down? Either takes some time and effort, but the finished product is well-worth it.

Is there an overhead light, a ceiling fan? Are those being replaced? Is there a fireplace? Has it been cleaned or does it need cleaning? Hope you took care of that before you put in that new beige carpet.

Window treatments are in position, framing the family's view to the outside while providing privacy.

Now, hold it before you move that furniture in. Let's find that antique rug to spice up the room.

The brilliant colors and classic patterns on these vintage rugs, often purchased from an antique rug dealer, highlight the staying power of these woven wool wonders. Red is often the primary color, but there are others templates that are featured in the rugs. And patterns abound. Choose your favorite, measure to be certain it is neither too large nor too small for the living room. Put it down and move the furniture in. You're done!
